Governor of Ebonyi State, Chief Dave Umahi yesterday set aside a N4 billion interest-free loan for workers in the state while lamenting plights of civil servants across the country as their salaries were nothing to write home about in view of the nation’s dwindling economy.  He, however, said that the state had earmarked N4 billion for the workers as loans to enable them engage in agriculture. Umahi spoke in Abakaliki during a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the state government and the Bank of Industry for Agro-based fund for civil servants in the state.

He described as pathetic the conditions of civil servants in the country and called on them to embrace agriculture and agro-businesses to complement their salaries. Umahi said: “I get so bordered about the plights of our civil servants all over the country. Their take home cannot be matched with the market forces, it is quite very pathetic and yet many states of the federation cannot pay these meager salaries to our civil servants.”

“It is something that should be a national concerns, it is not something that should be rooting for political interaction. We should be very honest and have an honest approach towards solving this problem. Every problem in our lives will come with their own solution and I believe that these problems of civil servants have solutions. I believe that one of the solutions may not be the oil wealth.”
